This information page for School Teachers provides details of cricket activities supporting the National Curriculum, which we can offer to Junior & Secondary Schools.

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is one of seven national governing bodies chosen by Sport England to deliver Club School links. The aim is to increase the percentage of school children in England who spend a minimum of 2 hours each week on high quality P.E. and School sport to 85% by 2008.

The ECB strategy aims for every school boy and girl to be introduced to cricket, and encourages schools to offer Cricket as both a curricular and extra curricular activity. To achieve this, the ECB employs Cricket Development Managers, and in Cumbria, our CDM is Bob Simpson:

Bob Simpson, County Cricket Development Manager

Endmoor, Kendal, Cumbria, LA8 0ED

Jon is an accredited and very experienced Cricket Coach who has attended the ECB Coaching in Schools module. (In fact, such is Jon's experience of this type of work, that he also now tutors the ECB's "Working in Schools" module for other cricket coaches within Cumbria)

Jon works very closely with Bob Simpson and personally delivers a high proportion of the Cumbria Cricket Board's planned cricket activities within and for schools in North and West Cumbria.

Over the last few years, Jon has worked very closely with Teachers at Infant, Primary, Junior and Secondary Schools to coach and encourage the playing of cricket. As word has spread, the number of Schools where we coach has expanded, and we now have a contract with the Allerdale School Sports Partnership, which involves us coaching cricket at every School in Allerdale (all 70 of them over the course of a year!) We also coach at some other Schools outside of Allerdale, and we are equally pleased to form part of the sporting programmes that each of our Schools offer.

Year 1 through to year 11 - we now have experience of dealing with EVERY age group of School Child, and we also have experience of working with all kind of Teachers - from those who have never picked up a cricket bat right up to those who are Specialist Secondary School PE Teachers with a good level of cricket knowledge.

We are delighted that our work within Schools has grown to this extent, and as an amusing aside, we now get accosted when we are out shopping for groceries by children of all ages who point at Jon & shout "Look Mum, that's our Cricket Man"

Every session we run at a School will try to include 2 main things:

  • Opportunities for the Participants to have fun playing cricket
  • Opportunities for Teachers to develop additional skills, confidence & ideas - to help them to continue to play cricket after we have gone.

Hard as it might be to believe, we work (in general terms) best part of a year ahead for diary bookings. That said, we will always try to fit in special requests from Schools where we can - so if you would like to discuss us undertaking some work at your School, then please do make contact with us.

Jon's diary is always booked on a first come first served basis, and below is an outline of the activities for 2007/08..............

  • Infant School Kinder Cricket - from Autumn 2007 right through to July 2008
  • Secondary School Year 7 Inter Cricket between September 2007 - February 2008,  with an Inter Cricket competition then being held for all Allerdale Secondary Schools.
  • Secondary School Year 8 Inter Cricket - between September 2007 - March 2008, culminating in 6 regional inter cricket competitions (all over Cumbria), and then a County Final.
  • Primary & Junior School Kwik Cricket (for year 5 & 6 children) - from Easter to Whit 2008 - with a County wide competition open to boys & girls in all Primary & Junior Schools - which can lead to taking part in an National Kwik Cricket Competition. We're also involved in the Girls Kwik Cricket Competition which will take place in Summer 2008. Any Cumbria based Primary / Junior School can take part in either (or both) of these competitions!
  • INSET training for Primary & Junior School Teachers. (Teachers / School staff attending one of these INSET courses receive a free copy of the ECB HOWZAT pack.)
  • After School Clubs continue to be one of the most "in demand" aspects of our work - all year round. With only 5 days of the week, we're really sorry but we are already fully booked for After School Clubs right through to July 2008 (and I already know that at least 2 of those Schools want to book to continue sessions through to July 2009!)
  • Young Leader Cricket Coaching courses for Secondary School / Specialist Sports Colleges - for those age 14-18.

A great deal of the coaching we offer costs Schools nothing at all! - If you are interested in finding out what we can do for YOUR School, then please make contact with us!

Our diary is always booked on a "first come first served" basis, so please do make contact with us if you would like to discuss activities for your School.

We really will try our best to help you.

Over 120 smiling faces - a real delight to see!
